Time for my 2018 cell phone detox.

Been spending too much time recently mindlessly scrolling my Insta feed. I love Insta but fuck me, this shit is addictive as hell.
.
Gonna detox for a bit and schedule some long, uninterrupted periods of creative free time in the studio... which is always where my best work comes.
.
Because ultimately that’s why you’re probably here right? For the music.
.
Many DJs can post semi-inspirational statuses or take the piss out of @nicelasers on stories, but I’m probably the only one who can make the next Long Way Home, so it’s time I got down to doing that which requires some long periods of phone-less time.

So yeah, if you don’t get a reply, I’m in the lab grinding out new music. Wish me luck!

Back home in Southampton UK, we randomly spotted the place where I did my first ever photo shoot for a @mixmag article in 2002 so here’s a recreation (swipe across for the original pic).

My career was literally just starting - I’d made a couple of records and to be honest had no business being in Mixmag at that time, but new artist hype is a powerful factor in music and I rinsed it for all I could 😃

Grateful as fuck for the amazing journey since that day and can’t wait to see what the next decade brings. X

For me, that’s trance music. This is me at a trance show in about 2002 just before I gave up my job to do this shit full time.

Fair to say I’ve been obsessed with trance music for 20 fucking years.
.
The best memories of my adult life are soundtracked by it.
.
The first dance at our wedding was Sandstorm 😂
.
And despite the fact I might have had a few flirtations with other styles from time to time, this music is a lifelong obsession.
.
If I’d never made it professionally, I’d still be coming home from the office and making trance tunes as a hobby.
.
My point is: whilst artistic success is really fucking difficult, if you choose something where you have that level of obsession and love, it’s easy to do the massive amounts of work required.
.
It’s how I kept going when I sent out demos for 4 years without a single bite.
.
It’s how I kept going when my career bottomed out and nobody would book me.
.
And so on.
.
Now, if I was simply in it for the money, fame, or other superficial reason, I would have given up and changed careers the moment things got hard. But trance? Nah. I life for this shit mate and however tough things get I will never fucking stop.
.
Your obsession may not be trance, but if you can make your career based around one of your obsessions, you’re going to be a lot more successful than those who are there for fame, money, or other superficial things. Get after it.
